I have always wanted to be a vet and was excited when I got my university place at Cambridge in 2008. It was only whilst I was at University that I began to see glimpses of some of the challenges that the profession is currently facing. By the time I graduated from Cambridge University in 2014, I was actually rather worried about going into practice (a feeling that was shared by over 50% of our survey respondents in 2017). Thankfully, my concern proved unjustified; completely by luck I found a lovely, supportive independent small animal practice (albeit with a 1:3 on call rota and a low salary) and I found that I really enjoy being a vet.

I graduated as a Vet in 2012 first working at a Small Animal practice, followed by an 'out of hours' only role, before going on to locum. This enabled me to develop my interest in teaching and mentoring with a focus on EMS students and New Graduate Vets.  I joined the team to help design and implement mentoring services. I combine this with clinical work near my home in Oxfordshire. In my spare time, I like to travel and be outdoors or just stay in with a cup of tea and dote on my two cats!

I graduated in 2011 from the RVC and my first job was exactly what I wanted, 100% equine role in a mixed practice. Importantly, it was a role that was supportive and encouraging for me as a new graduate and had a great support network in other colleagues who were also relatively recent graduates. I loved being in clinical practice, and also found myself really enjoying the business side of practice, so chose to explore that with a parental leave position 7 years ago and have never left! I'm really passionate about supporting the next generation to have a good start in practice life too and am pleased to be able to support that through Grads to Vets. Outside of work, I can be found walking my two chocolate labradors 'Rolo' and 'Buttons' in beautiful Northumberland, baking, doing yoga or taking on yet another DIY project!
