We are offering the following:

  • Two year contract with a view to permanency if mutually agreeable

  • Average 40 hours per week, based over 4 week-days in the clinic each week, plus 1 in 4 Saturday mornings 9-1, eventually joining the 1 in 9 on call rota for inpatient care only. Shifts vary on a rota pattern which overlap to cover our opening hours, 8-5, 9-5, 9-6, 10-7 (on call).

  • Basic salary: £32k year one, £37k year two

  • 5 weeks holiday plus bank holidays each year (or time in lieu)

  • Dedicated, protected time each week with your in-house VetGDP advisor to support you in your professional development.

  • Comprehensive CPD plan to support you through the VetGDP process: External CPD includes tickets to the London Vet Show in year one, enrollment on the Grads to Vets programme in year one (this includes 4 dedicated external CPD days, peer support network with monthly case discussion groups, and an external mentor, as well as your in house VetGDP advisor.)

  • £1000+ CPD budget for year two to spend on courses fulfilling your own interest areas

  • In-house CPD from our experienced team in a wide area including exotics, surgery, internal medicine, ECC, cardiology, behaviour, communication skills, and imaging.

  • Learn from a team of vets, nurses and front-of-house staff who have a wealth of experience and extensive patience!

  • Treat (mostly) lovely animals and interact with our (mostly) genuinely lovely clients – from a wide breadth of society, some insured, some not – practice how it is possible to tailor your treatment to serve the pet’s clinical needs within the clients’ means - essential for first opinion practice in 2024.

  • Have a gradual introduction to out-of-hours care for our inpatients (we use VetsNow for emergencies, but keep care in-house for inpatients and those who have recently had surgery on-site for best case continuity).

Don’t let your first year out be terrifying – join a supportive practice that wants to keep you for the long-term!

VH New Graduate Plan - further information

The VH Graduate Plan is designed to provide a structured period of support for a new or recently graduated veterinary surgeon, one who has had a career break, or one who is new to first opinion small animal general practice. The aim is to support the transition from being ‘day one competent’ to being a confident, first-opinion small animal general practitioner, with a solid foundation of practice in consulting and first-opinion surgery. It is hoped that our graduates will wish to stay on with a permanent contract with VH at the end of the two-year contract, but if they choose to move on, they will have a good grounding for the next phase of their career.

The Graduate Plan is designed to give the clinician support, mentoring, and a gradual introduction to first-opinion work in the UK. Both clinical and non-clinical CPD will be provided. In return, they will assist the permanent vets and nurses in their day-to-day first opinion and out-of-hours (OOH) work, and with morning inpatient checks and rounds.

New clinicians are not interns; they will have their own first opinion caseload at a level appropriate to their experience and skill set. It is expected that any complicated cases will be internally referred to a permanent vet who should keep them involved to aid their development.

VetGDP Advisor Role

Each clinician will have a designated VetGDPAdvisor and multiple additional advisors who have volunteered to help. However, the clinicians are expected to seek advice whenever necessary and all vets, nurses and receptionists are expected to support them, in return for the benefits that they bring. 45 minute meetings will be booked with their VetGDP Advisor every week. Goals will be set for the clinician to achieve; they may be asked to prepare presentations, write protocols, organise clinical clubs, etc. Use of the RCVS EPA sheets (Entrustable Professional Activity) will assist with monitoring progress.

External CPD and support in the first year will be provided by attendance at the London Vet Show, and enrolment on the Grads to Vets 1 year program which also offers the support of an external mentor, 8 external CPD days, online cpd mini-series of the graduate’s choice from VetCPD, and monthly online case discussions.
